Tung eager to go on China return

2009-02-20

Friday, February 20, 2009

First impressions of Kyalami have been incredibly favourable for the A1GP drivers, and A1 Team China’s returning driver Ho-Pin Tung – taking over from Congfu Cheng after missing the races in Taupo in January – is among those who can’t wait to get out onto the dipping and twisting blacktop this afternoon.
Just back from a lap on foot, the 26-year-old racer told A1GP.com: “Kyalami is a really exciting circuit. There are fast corners, corners with a blind turn-in, and corners that you have to get absolutely right so that you can carry momentum up the hill that follows. It will be really interesting to see if you can follow another car closely through the fast corners. It will also be interesting to see if everyone can avoid the fixed cones at the chicane before the final corner.
“The track will be physical, although there are a few more stretches you can relax on than there were at Chengdu and Taupo. The track surface is abrasive, too, so that will make it interesting regarding tyre wear in the races.”
With only four points on the board and ranking 17th overall in the championship, Tung is very aware that A1 Team China needs to leave South Africa with a couple of strong races to its name.
“We like to fight,” grinned Tung, making light of the fact that China hasn’t brought a rookie and so will not be running in the first official practice session for rookies and developing nations.
